follow-up (noun)

Definition:
A continuation or review of a previous action, task, or discussion, typically intended to reinforce or evaluate results, ensure progress, or address unresolved issues.

One of the main things that the local church that we work with has struggled with over the last few years is providing follow-up activities to help new campers transition from camp to the youth group at church.  In the Czech Republic, summer is a really busy time for churches.  The local church we work with is no different.  The youth leaders are busy hosting camps for all different ages.  As a result, no normal youth group meetings are held during the summer months.

Enter the Sandy family.  Our goal during our extra two weeks here is to provide assistance to the local youth group so that there are follow-up activities that bridge the gap between camp and regular youth group meetings which start in September.  In addition to the “formal” activities, Anna is also doing a great job nurturing friendships that she has built over the years.

Thursday was the first formal follow up activity.  We decided that a bible study following the life of Paul would pair well with the materials shared during camp.  We chose to use the Discovery Bible Study method (very similar to what is done at BOOST) because it is friendly to everyone, regardless of how much or little they know about the bible.  Below, is a screenshot of one of the invitations that was sent to the students.  It says “Continuing with Paul” in Czech.

We proceeded a bit in faith because nothing like this had been done after camp, so we didn’t know how many people would show up.  I had visions of an empty room except for Rachael (our church partner for the evening), and the Sandy family.  These fears turned out to be unfounded.  An additional 9 people showed up – there is room for improvement, but for a first attempt, it was a strong showing.

The food was good, the discussions were great, and everyone left encouraged.  Next Thursday, we hope to see even more attendees.

The next formal event is my preaching at tomorrow’s church service.  I hope to post a link to it tomorrow. Until then, thank you for your prayers.  We are encouraged by what we see God doing here, but we also miss you as well.

With every blessing in Christ,

-Doug
