Lift Up:
- To raise to a higher position
- To exalt or honor; to raise in status or reverence
- To elevate someone’s mood or spirit; to inspire or encourage
Tonight, we had the pleasure of spending time with a family from church — what began with a little uncertainty unfolded into something truly memorable.
We were graciously invited into their beautiful garden outside the city, where we shared an informal dinner and conversation. The setting was relaxed and welcoming. As always, Czech hospitality is amazing. As we ate, we also talked. There was very little “chit-chat” (not really part of the Czech culture). Instead, we dove into conversations that were meaningful to each other, and helped form a deep bond of understanding.
So what were the topics of conversation? Very much the same as what we might have in the States: children, jobs, faith, showing the love of Jesus in a sometimes challenging world.
Language posed a small challenge when no translation was available. There were moments of hesitancy and thoughtful pauses as we navigated our way through unfamiliar expressions. But with a little effort and a lot of goodwill, and help from google translate, we found our rhythm. When all else failed, gestures became bridges between us.
It was during these times of discussion that I also was unexpectedly blessed. “Thank you for what you said in your sermon.” I had to make sure I understood properly. Yes. God used the talk that I had given in faith on Sunday. Despite the language barrier, and the awkward timing, God’s word had made a deep impact.
What I had initially imagined might be a slightly difficult evening due to language issues turned out to be an experience that surprised with joy. There’s something remarkably heartening about reaching across language and cultural barriers to discover common ground in Christ.
We’re deeply thankful for the generous hospitality and kindness we received. And more than that, we’re excited to see this lovely family again soon.
Prayer Requests:
- Health for the interns and the Sandy family during their extended stays in the Czech Republic. Note that there is a stomach bug going through the camp where Aidan and Levi are serving.
- Blessing on the Czech leaders that God continues His work in the lives of those He touched at English Camp and the follow-ups.
